It is no secret that Montreal is gaining a lot of traction in the data center space. If there is one thing that data centers need to deliver their services to the outside world, it’s connectivity. Until today, Montreal had a fair bit of connectivity towards Toronto, New York, and Halifax.

However, with most major hyperscalers now in Montreal, the bandwidth demand towards the US is growing. Local connectivity is great, but uplinks to the larger internet are as important.
In late 2019, Zayo has announced new capacity between Montreal and Albany, which is the main path for traffic going towards New York.
“The new route will provide multiple terabits of long haul transport capacity between Montreal and major northeast U.S. markets and is expected to be in service by January 2020. “
– Zayo Group Holdings, Inc.

This new capacity takes form with a new wavelength router allowing to use of current fibers to spin-up new 100G links. When adding up these 100G links, Zayo will be able to reach multiple terabits of capacity. This extra bandwidth will help transit providers and organizations provide massive bandwidth between Canada and the USA.
